The One with Fancier Photos than Normal

One thing I love about my job (besides my actual job!) is that we have some incredible benefits to take advantage of. I am so grateful to work in education and for an employer that values continued learning. With a variety of different opportunities, this year I'm focusing on taking advantage of some different creative classes and decided to start with photography.

Photo courtesy of my friend Tory during class!
I've always been interested in, and also intimidated by, photography. It is such an essential skill to have in life because you can have incredible crafts and talent, but being able to capture it well takes it to a different level. While I am no pro, I must say that I love knowing how to use the "fancy" functions of my camera and haven't shot it auto once in 2015.

The class has really pulled me outside of my comfort zone as well. I tend to pick up creative skills easily and the two things I've been focusing on this year, photography and calligraphy, are crafts that haven't come to me too quickly. There has been a lot of trial and error and a whole lot of blurry photos with terrible light. But, it's getting better.

Here are some of my favorites so far! The first few are from my friend Erin's baby shower which I still need to share more about, the details were incredible. Of course there's some volleyball, which has been a really easy place for me to work on my skills although shooting indoors is tricky. Lastly, a few snow shots from around campus as a part of my class homework. Enjoy!

Is that Erin?? How do you two know each other?! Such a small world. I took a photography class at U of R last year and I loved it!

Yes m'am it is!! We were in the same new member group in the Junior League when we joined last year. I had never even put two and two together that y'all probably new each other through Capital One!

Do you play V-ball?! My brother played at RVC for years and is now playing in college. My oldest starts playing this summer! She is a tall, lefty and she has been groomed by my brother so we have high hopes for a college scholarship! ;)

I would love to learn how to take better pictures, but I only have my phone camera to work with so I do the best I can!

I do not Nicole, but my husband coaches! He is actually at RVC and also coaches a high school team. He's always keeping an eye out for up and coming players--we'll have to connect about your daughter when we finally grab coffee!

I completely understand, I just recently acquired this camera! I've learned some new tricks for better iPhone pictures as well. Definitely see if you can photograph in the morning with non-direct natural light. My neighbors probably think I'm crazy because the best place in our house is with the front door open in the stream of light it lets in. If you're shooting detail shots, buy a cheap piece of white foam board to shoot on top of--it will look like you're shooting on a professionally set white surface!

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely try that!

Progress is progress!

I meal plan every Sunday so I hope you don't mind me offering a tip that might help you get started: group your favorite meals. This might mean printing out your favorite recipes and putting them in a 3-ring binder. Or, this could mean writing a list of your favorite meals. You could take notes on the recipes about what you like to have with it, or make a separate list of favorite sides. Or even group your favorite meals into categories, like "30 minutes or less" and "when I have a little extra time." The point is, having ONE place to go to with a small grouping of meals makes meal planning so much easier! That way you're not sitting there trying to pull ideas from the sky.

If you're still stumped, just make your list be categories. "Burgers, pasta, breakfast for dinner, sandwiches, fish" etc.

Hope that helps! You can do it! It makes life so much easier!!
